Roslyn Shops prior to 1950-1951

Some Roslyn shops pre 1950

IMPORTANT NOTE: Street names in the Roslyn shopping area changed as time passed,
this confuses listings as at different points in time the shops were in City Road,
Taieri Road or High Street/Highgate. Their location didn't change but the
street address and/or numbers did.

See sketch showing street name changes in Roslyn shopping area.

For more detailed information on changes of occupants of the various businesses
check the Street Listings Section and select the year for the list you require.

Not all years are covered in the address listings on this page. You will find proprietors of these businesses for 1888, 1902, 1909, 1919, 1936, 1942, 1950 & 1951 in the Who lived where pages.
City Road   The premises on the left side of City Road at the junction of Highgate (shown as 31 on the map above) appears to have had no listed number in earlier years. However, it appears Simpson's Bakehouse was here some time after WW-II.   In 1942 the last directory address was No.27 but it appears the shop was not allocated a number at that time (like the Gospel Hall, Telephone Exchange and Fire Station).   The last name on that side was John Sharples, Fishmonger.   Likewise, in 1936 the last directory address was No.29 and the last name on that side was William Boyd, Fishmonger.   1909 directory shows No.29 as Reid (WS) & Co., Grocers.   Currently there are public toilets located on this site.

Appian Way runs off Erin Street just up from Sligo Terrace.

Taieri Road used to start at the Sligo Terrace/Scarba Street junction, was later renumbered from Highgate as on the map above, and the section from Highgate to Scarba Street was renamed as an extension to the existing City Road.   Subsequently, the Highgate section of Taieri Road was included in the Highgate street numbers and Taieri Road then started from the intersection of Kaikorai Valley Road and Walton Street.

Please remember also that indications of where section boundaries are located are very approximate and in the case of the 'centre island' are mostly guess work. Any photographs of this area that might be available for loan purposes would be greatly appreciated.
