You will find proprietors of these businesses for 1909, 1919, 1936, 1942 & 1950 in the Who lived where pages. City Road was the 'town' end of Taieri Road till the early 1900s. On a city map dated 1913 it is shown passing through Highgate and continuing right down to end at Nairn Street. Taieri Road was then called West Taieri Road, and started at Church St (Nairn St) and continued up the hill through Wakari. City Road later terminated at the cable car line. Some time after the cable car tracks were removed Stuart Street is shown as continuing through to the junction of Kaikorai Valley Road where Taieri Road then starts. Appian Way runs off Erin Street just up from Sligo Terrace. Highgate was named High Street until 1913. However, the name of section from Roslyn to Maori Hill did not change till 1916 when it also changed to Highgate. King Street was the name for Erin Street till around 1913 - reputed to have been called Erin Street due to the number of Irish folk living there according to one source. Taieri Road used to start at the Sligo Terrace/Scarba Street junction, was later renumbered from Highgate. The section from Highgate to Scarba Street was renamed as an extension to the existing City Road. Subsequently, the Highgate section of Taieri Road was included in the Highgate street numbers and Taieri Road then started from the Nairn Street side of Kaikorai Valley Road. Please remember that indications of when section boundaries are located are very approximate and in the case of the 'centre island' are mostly guess work.
