![]() Shops at Highgate "Dip" (Bishopscourt)Highgate was previously High Street, and in 1888 street directory is shown as District Road. High Street changed to Highgate in the Roslyn area in 1913 but only changed to Highgate in Maori Hill in 1916. Source - DCC archives. Note that Highgate (LHS) was numbered starting from Epsilon Street where Highgate changes to Kenmure Road to the South. The year the photograph below was taken is not known but still has tram rails showing and the sign on the store is "R Armit & Co". There appears to be another shop front on the far side of the Dunblane Street intersection and this is listed in the 1936 Stones Directory (see below) and the butcher and fruiter appear in the 1942 directory but not in 1936. It is probably the butcher shop shown next to Armit's in the photograph. The photograph does not appear to show the electric tram overhead wire, although they may be hard to distinguish if in fact there. It is therefore possible that the photo is after 1936 and before the tram lines were ripped up. Operations on the Maori Hill line ceased on 1st July 1936.
