
What we did - Making Crystal Sets
Many will remember the days when as youngsters we built crystal sets and one valve radios. We listened through headphones to local broadcast radio stations, sometimes two at once due to the close proximity to Dunedin transmitters.
Some of these crystal sets were marketed in kitset form from "The Electric Lamphouse Ltd" of Manners Street, Wellington whose publication "The Lamphouse Annual" was keenly sought after. Two pages from the 1942-43 Lamphouse Annual appear below.
In more modern times of course, instead of lumps of quartz crystal and wire 'cats whiskers', we use little crystal diodes which cost almost nothing. See image directly below.
