Making trolleys

Making Trolley

This photograph was taken in the mid 1940s in our back yard. One of the many things we did as children was make things and just about all the boys had trolleys.

The designs of these modes of transport were many and varied. We would scavenge at the local tips (rubbish dumps) where the best wheels and axles came from disused prams and pushchairs.

Brakes were not required until after the first try out on a hill when you discovered feet were the only way to stop. You then realised you had forgotten to add brakes. The brakes generally consisted of a bit of wood bolted to the trolley in such a way as to either drag on the ground when pulled or in more refined mode actually rubbed on the tyre of one of the wheels.

Sadly, trolleys now appear to be a things of the past - today's children miss out on a lot of the fun I'm afraid. Is this the price of progress?
