FIFE AND DRUM BAND.
J. H. MATHESON, BANDMASTER.
"Music is the link between the spiritual and the sensual life : it is a more lofty revelation than all wisdom and philosophy." Thus spoke Beethoven. Music, hath charms, and there is a certain peculiar fascination about any band of musicians for boys: the music, the uniform, the ability to blow or play an instrument appeals to a boy, especially if he is musical.

With the idea of fostering a love for music among the boys.. the project of forming a School Band (the second in Dunedin) was first mooted in 1911. The proposal was taken up so, enthusiastically by the teachers that at two entertainments provided by the pupils sufficient funds were raised to equip a band of 36 performers. The first uniform was neatly designed in royal and navy blue—the School colours. It consisted of a jersey, Glengary cap, knickers, belt, and stockings, nearly, ail of which articles belonged formerly to the School Cadets.

Since its inauguration, the Band has been a valuable adjunct to the School, playing for the marching and drill exercises. It has assisted at many and various outside functions. It has taken part in all the competitions for Fife and Drum, Bands, with the exception of one year. In 191.3 it secured first place in the B Grade Contest, and was twice second.

Three years ago it was decided to procure a better and more serviceable uniform, and by the aid of a. Jumble Sale over £120 was raised, which was sufficient to procure the present. handsome khaki uniform, also picked out in the School colours.

The boys take immense pride in their Band, and although the ranks are depleted annually by eight or nine of the best players, there are always recruits coming forward. Now that the Band is almost fully equipped, it will be able to product. music of a higher quality.
