KAIKORAI SCHOOL JUBILEE

SONNET :

Ave Atque Vale.

To the fragrant memory of those Old Boys of Kaikorai School
who laid down their lives for the Empire in the
Great War, 1914-1918.

Far from the sunshine of your own home-land,

Rest folds you 'neath her consecrated wings,

While honour weaves your pall with reverent hand,

And Freedom o'er you sweetest requiem sings;

With boyhood's smiling eyes you death defied,

Left all and followed where grim Duty led,

Now in proud Britain's heart your names abide,

Enscrolled among the imperishable dead.

Hail and farewell ! true hearts will not forget

Your purpose high, your love unquenchable,

The splendour of your willing sacrifice;

Hail and farewell ! no, flower of vain regret

Blooms with the amaranth and asphodel

Beside the pathways of your paradise.
