Moulin Rouge Dance Hall(Previously known as Wakari Drill Hall)ROSLYN - This cinema was situated in Nairn Street and was first used on May 17, 1919. It was closed from the beginning of 1920 until June 1926, when it was re-opened as the Moulin Rouge. The cinema was closed for the final time on August 10, 1929. Dunedin City Council gave permission for the hall to be demolished in 1958. In 1919 this location is shown as the Wakari Drill Hall. In 1936 the location is shown as both Wakari Drill Hall and the Moulin Rouge Dance Hall. 1942 Stones Street Directory shows 37a as Albert Victor Roberts, fruiterer & confectioner, but no mention of the hall even though it still stood with Roberts being at the left front of the building (my personal recollection). ![]() The Moulin Rouge Dance Hall/Wakari Drill Hall can be seen in the centre of this photograph above the roof of Frasers Bakery - just to the right of the power pole. 1957 Photo K346 |
