Leyland diesel buses introduced in 1935 were successful on Dunedin's hills and it was
decided that the Maori Hill electric trams would be replaced by diesel buses from 1st July 1936.

Although the bus has tyre chains it appears it was not enough to stop it
from becoming victim to the snow and in so doing blocks the cable car line.
This photograph is presumed to have been taken during the great snow of 1939.
