The top photograph above is the Highgate "Dip" area. Just past Columba College near Dunblane, Fairfax, McMillan, Lynn St.
The year of the photograph is not known but still has tram rails showing and the sign on the store is "R Armit & Co". The photograph does not appear to show the electric tram overhead wire, although they may be hard to distinguish if in fact there. It is therefore possible that the photo could be after 1936 and before the tram lines were ripped up. The second photograph is thought to be around 1926 and comes from an early Otago Witness newspaper. Operations on the Maori Hill line ceased on 1st July 1936 according to "By Toe & Straphold" by Joseph M.Kenneally, printed by John McIndoe Ltd in 1979. At right is a 2007 photograph of the remaining evidence of the old electric tram tracks on the section between Scarba Street and Ross Street. |
