Demise of the Maori Hill horse-drawn tram. The horse traction which has been in vogue on the Roslyn Tram Company's extension line for so many years was finally abolished yesterday, and the modern electrically-propelled cars brought into permanent operation. There is no doubt as to the effective manner in which the electrical installation has been carried on, and there is equally no doubt as to the efficiency of the system for tramways. It is a triumphant argument in the minds of everyone who has seen it in favour of the overhead electrical system. That an opportunity of judging of its merits is afforded at this juncture is most opportune, as the day is fast approaching now when the citizens will be asked to declare whether the corporation shall or shall not municipalise the city trams and substitute for the present antiquated system an up-to-date modern one with electricity as the motive power. The Roslyn electric cars are swift, safe, and easily managed. Travelling through the pretty suburb at night time, gleaming with electric lights, the cars present an exceedingly pretty spectacle. The Roslyn borough will benefit by the introduction of these trams in another way, and that is in the illumination of several of their principal thoroughfares as the company intend shortly to erect electric lamps at different spots along the line of route. |
