The Cable Car Gripper

As mentioned on the previous page, there was an adjustment available to the driver of the cable car to set the amount of pressure the gripper could assert onto the cable below the tram. This was by way of an adjustment wheel on or near the gripper lever. In the case of the picture above it was just above the floor boards. This picture is of one of the old Mary Hill cars. On the Kaikorai Line the wheel was mounted near the top of the gripper lever itself according to Jim Sharp who used to be a gripman on the Kaikorai Line.
