Start and finish of the line. The Kaikorai line was the last of the Dunedin cable car services to be constructed, this was in 1897 and took three years to complete. At that time the line was under private ownership but it was sold to the Dunedin City Corporation in 1939 for $17,000.00 (not sure if that's supposed to be pounds). The last car to run on the Kaikorai line was at 11.10p.m. on Friday 31st July 1947. I have a recording of an interview with Jim Sharp, the driver of that last tram. It is too large to be included with these pages. |
Above: Situated near the site of old cable car sheds, Cableways Bistro & Bar has this restored cablecar 'out front' and although this particular car was not on the Octagon to Nairn Street line it makes a fitting reminder of our past. The interior of the premises has numerous pictures of early Kaikorai and the Kaikorai cable cars. See next page on ripping up the rails after closure of the line. |
